The Dog with Three Heads by Jasmeek and Charlotte from Little Thurrock Primary School

In the middle of the village was a mysterious house.  It was mysterious because, although nobody lived there, lights would go on and off, windows would open and shut and smoke would come out of the chimney.  People kept well away.

One day, the villagers were having a party in the square (the mysterious house made up the western side of the square by the way), keeping well over on the eastern side of the square (of course - see previous brackets!!!).  They were having a jolly old time, with lots of music, food and, of course, drink.

Suddenly one of the children screamed and pointed at the top right-hand window of the mysterious house.  There, staring out, was a dog's head.  Then another head appeared in the middle window and a third in the left-hand window.  All three heads looked right and left, then up and down.  All three mouths opened at the same time and barked.  Well, I say "barked" - was more of a screechy roar really.  The heads drew back and the villagers could see them charge at the windows, mouths wide open making the most spine-tingling noise.  CRASH!!!

Now you are probably expecting the dogs to have crashed through the windows onto the square, causing mayhem and havoc as they went...but no, actually.  The heads slammed into the windows, their jowls were smashed against the glass, they gave a horrible howl, and slid down to the floor.  You see, when you are a dog with three heads (for yes, it was just that), you can run at three windows as much as you like, but you won't go through because your body is, meantime, smashing against the wall in between.

ANYWAY, it gradually dawned on the villagers what they were having to deal with here.  They were just getting used to the idea as they cleared up the party when an enormous hissing sounds bounced around the square.  They all turned slowly and looked up at the windows of the mysterious house.  There, the three heads were smiling broadly and behind them could be seen coils and coils of  a bright green  something.  As the villagers looked, the bright green something began to uncoil itself and an enormous head appeared with shiny red eyes, glaring down at the villagers.  It was a basilisk (a snake to you and me).  The villagers turned and ran, leaving all their bits and bobs behind them.

Over the next few weeks people began to disappear in the middle of the night.  One minute they were there, next minute they weren't kind of thing.  The villagers got worried.  Screams could be heard from the mysterious house but no sign of the dog or the snake was to be seen.

The villagers held a meeting and decided to cover themselves with poison, just in case.  Of course, the next one to go, all covered in poison, disappeared, reappeared in a manner of seconds, spat out back through the front door of the mysterious house, clutching a note saying "DON'T BOTHER, JUST DON'T BOTHER - YOU ALL TASTE 'ORRIBLE ENOUGH AS IT IS WITHOUT COVERING YOURSELVES WITH POISON.  LOVE DOG AND SNAKE."

What to do?  No-one knew.  More people disappeared and soon there were only a few villagers left.  One of them knew of a traveller called Keiran and he got a message to him to come quickly since things were getting desperate and they  needed help.

Keiran arrived and the villagers explained the problem  (problem?  more like a blooming great disaster don't you think?).  Keiran went off to sit in his tent and think deeply.  He thought deeply for three days and three nights and then reappeared.  He called a meeting and instructed the villagers.

The villagers crept around the vilage collecting tasty morsels of food.  They piled them up on the edge of the village and then, quietly, they set about building a helter-skelter from the top of the mysterious house to the pile of food (oh, I forgot to mention that the food was on the top of a sand-dune right next to the sea).  They could see eyes peering at them from corners of the windows whilst they did this but did their best to ignore them.

The next evening the villagers met in the square.  They danced about, calling the dog and snake every name under the sun and saying things like "yah boo sucks!!" and "three heads, red eyes is rubbish" and other such nonsense.  Of course the dog and the snake got more and more furious and found themselves battling to get out of the attic window all at the same time in a rush to leap off the roof and attack the villagers.  They did get in a bit of a muddle actually and took quite 17 minutes to sort coils from heads, heads from coils and so on.

This delay served to calm them down a bit and when they emerged onto the roof, looking a bit tattered and torn, the first thing they spotted was the helter-skelter.  They approached the entrance carefully and, wafting up through the slide was the most delicious smell of tasty snacks.  After a bit of jostling and "no, you go first...", "no, it's OK, after you..."s the dog launched himself down the slide, the snake not far behind.

Well, I tell you, apart from having the most wonderful feast at the end of the helter-skelter (on top of a sand dune next to the sea, remember?), they bounced off down the beach and splashed and sploshed in the rippling waves having the time of their lives!

In the end the villagers had to call them back as it was getting late and, guess what, they went quite happily with the villagers, even asked them in for a cup of tea and a sandwich at the mysterious house (the tea was OK but the villagers were suspicious that the filling in the sandwiches may well be their nearest and dearest all chopped up with mayonnaise, and declined politely).

They all live together happily now.  The dog and snake play regularly on the helter-skelter and take dips in the sea.  The villagers go about their business as normal and all is well with the world!
