The Magic Angel by Joe W

Once upon a time, in ancient Greece, lived a giant made of hard lava.  This giant lived at the bottom of a volcano and would creep into the nearest village in the deep, dark dusk and steal the children of the villagers.

The villagers spent their lives in fear and trembling, but apart from shooting him with arrows (which, of course, just bounced straight off) they couldn't think what to do.

One day, a stranger came to the village.  He told tales of magical lands, far away, where people lived in peace and quiet (without nasty great lava giants and such things) and the villagers knew that they must do something.  They told the stranger and he smiled beautifully at them before walking away.  The villagers were sad as they felt quite, quite abandoned.

Once out of the village, the stranger stopped.  He threw off his cloak and revealed his beautiful golden body, clothed in golden cloth and shining like the sun.  He reached into his bag and pulled out a phial of hot oil, then hid behind a rock until the deep, dark dusk arrived.

The lava giant, thinking of the nice plump meal which was awaiting him in the village, came skipping down the road.  As he passed the rock, the angel stepped out in his path.  The lava giant stopped and stared.  The angel threw the hot oil all over the lava monster.  The monster looked very surprised, looked himself up and down and...then...just crumbled in a heap.

The angel put his cloak back on and carried on his way.

The villagers, when they realised that the lava giant had gone, asked each other the question: "Who was that man?"

Only one, small boy replied: "That? That was the Magic Angel!"
