Why Tell to Young People.
There is a body of academic evidence that supports the use of storytelling to and by young people as a crucial developmental tool – see the works of Baker, Bettelheim, Scott...........
But briefly:
1 To entertain and amuse the individual – to have fun!
2 Introduce a student to oral language patterns. Knowledge and skill with the spoken word is prerequisite to achieving success in reading.
3 Develop listening skills.
4 Develop the ability to interpret events beyond an immediate experience.
5 To expand the young person’s worldview in a non threatening atmosphere.
6 Share and create an experience that is both common to the assembled group and yet is an exceptionally personal experience.
7 Contribute to the social and cognitive development through a shared experience – to feel joy for another’s happiness or sadness at their misfortune.
8 To give a means of structure to the individuals daydreams and fantasies.
9 To aid in the development of an ethical value system.
10 Help the appreciation of the child’s own heritage and that of others
11 To give an understanding of story shape and structure and so improve writing skills.
12 To have fun. Without fun, there’s no f in education!
It
