Writers in Schools

Workshops Available from Storyteller & Writer, David James:

Upper Key Stage 2 / Key Stage 3:

Pictures and Hooks:

An introductory workshop to the art of ‘Creative Writing’.

This course will take students on a journey from how they think to how to think like a writer. It will cover visualisation, character development and setting. The course uses the techniques of ‘hooking’ on the known to explore the unknown. Each participant should end the day with a piece of poetic prose.

Story Frames and Story Games:

From the structure behind folk tales and legends to the recipe of Hollywood movie – from individual word play to story circles – a set of workshop devices that will give students a toolbox to help them put structure and narrative form into their creative writing.

Yeah, write!

“Me – a writer! Nothing ever happens to me – I’ve got nothing to say.”

A sharing of a range of experience – real and vicarious – that encourages new and original writing.

(Particularly useful for reluctant readers / writers. The use of a computer suite and recording equipment is essential to take away the problems of transcription)

Collaborative writing:

An introduction to the technique of writing together.

Simple exercises become progressively more difficult as groups of students are taken on a journey to become a scriptwriter’s conference team!

Key Stage 4 – Adult Writers Groups

Starting Points & Block Breakers:

Never be short of ideas again! Techniques to train your brain into writing.

Story Maps & Plot Plans:

Shaping up your plot – from linear story to parallel; from flashback to cyclic – how to adjust the shape of your storyline.

This session will examine various story shapes and form; the advantages and pitfalls of shape shifting and how to adjust the shape to fit the market.

The Art & Graft of Writing:

From thought to page; from idea to agent; from concept to bookstore. The process of ‘real’ writing – getting your name on the spine!

Write Here, Write Now:

Real life story lines – particularly suitable for reluctant readers and writers. An examination of the concerns and culture of today’s young people that leads them to express themselves in writing.
