A tantalising excerpt from one of David's short stories entitled:
Ephraim (the story of
Ephraim's Pinch)

In a farm near Postbridge there was great joy. The farmer’s wife was about to give birth. The farmer – a hulking great figure of a man – was looking forward to the birth of his first child. When the child was born, a skinny sad looking boy, his pleasure was diluted. Still, he’d seen the runt of the last litter of pups grow to be the best of his current working dogs, so he still had some hope...............................
.............................A strange thing had happened to Ephraim. He was no longer skinny or scrawny – he had filled out. At just 8 years of age, he had muscle on his muscles! Somehow, each day, he grew a little stronger.....................................
....................................Ephraim walked tall and proud and all admired him – even some who were not human. In the deepest, darkest and gloomiest spot of Soussons Down, in the middle of the forest, dwelt a witch. Each evening at dusk she would ride the back of a standing hawk and survey her territory.......................In the early dawn she crept into Ephraim’s yard to show him the fruit of their binding. Ephraim was disgusted!...........................................The witch called up the clouds and a downpour drowned out the fire – but it was too late for her child............................She swept up the black ash that was all that remained of her offspring and fled, vowing that she would.............. avenged......................................
