Storytelling
reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it.
(Hannah Arendt)
- and it has done so throughout the history of mankind. The Greeks and Romans did it; tribal cultures still do it. Storytelling has been around for as long as mankind has had speech – passed from lips to ears, mind to mind and heart to heart. Storytelling evolves, grows and changes. It is a direct and instant two-way communication between teller and listener.
That is why storytellers do it differently every time!
Shakespeare wrote:
For God’s sake, let us sit upon the ground and tell sad stories (Richard II)
- so lets do it!
There are many books and courses, web-sites and resources to get you started – but there is no better way than just getting up and doing it! A young student who worked with me at festivals and clubs impressed her teenage friends and her teachers with her skill as a storyteller. She was dyslexic. She was asked how she managed to produce such wonderful stories and her reply was:
It’s
easy. You just open your mouth and God puts the words in for you.
While I strongly believe that she was correct, that we are all born with an innate skill as storytellers, most have left it to rust. If you are to perform, the skill needs to be polished. Try these own brand products!
